Supplies

Hi, Thanks for making flowers with me. Links to the supplies I use in my classes are below. If you are looking for specialty flower cutters and veiners, send me an email. poojanyc@gmail.com

Most of the tools can be found in the cake decorating aisle at craft stores.

Clay: The clay I use is very specific -  if you work with ceramics, please do not confuse the terms used here.

The clay is called cold porcelain. It is not a porcelain, it's just what it is called.

It is actually a polymer clay - do not confuse it with the baked kind of polymer clay from sculpey.

This is an AIR DRY POLYMER CLAY. It is manufactured in Thailand.

I use the brand Nara Flower Clay in my classes as I find it most economical to use.

Nara Flower Clay from Amazon

Nara Flower Clay from Hobby Lobby

Materials/Tools for both cold porcelain and sugar flowers:

- Rolling Pin Clear Acrylic (Amazon)

- Rolling Pin White (Amazon)

- Ball Tools  (Amazon)

- Small sharp embroidery or cuticle scissors  (Michaels)

- Wilton Shaping Foam or any craft foam

- Floral Wires and tape  (Amazon)

- Floral Wires  (Michaels )

- Floral Wires and tape  (Hobby Lobby)

- Floral Tape:  Michaels

- Modeling Sticks  Hobby Lobby

- Needle nose pliers

- 3 soft eyeshadow brushes - wet ‘n wild (Amazon)

(I prefer wetnwild brand, they hold a lot of powder. Other polyester brushes especially art brushes are not designed for using with powders - keep that in mind)

- Nivea cream  (Amazon) (You can also use Pond's Cold cream. "Cold Cream" is a certain manufacturing process that works with this clay vs other regular moisturizers. You can also use vaseline)

- Foam to dry the flowers

- Plastic Sheet protectors - heavy duty works best

- Baby Oil to use on the plastic sheets

Coloring:

Clay: I use oil paints to lightly tint the clay. I find higher quality brands like Winston & Newton have less oil/pigment separation but any will work. You don't need to buy a whole set, buy individual colors like White, different Yellow shades, Sap Green, Fuschia (or mix pink using red and white), and purple/violet.

Coloring/Dusting:

If you're making flowers in sugar - look for edible "petal dusts" on Amazon.

For clay you can use an eye shadow set - any brand - make sure the colors are matt finish, not metallic

Most used colors for flowers are the same as the oil paint colors listed above - pinks, greens, yellows, purples.

Recommended: I use PanPastel for my personal colors. (Availbale online on Amazon or Blick art stores). Panpastels are around $8 each, you can find sets on Amazon but check the colors available in each set as they may not work for flowers.

Colorless blender is a good PanPastel blending medium to mix colors.
